Affordable Healthcare Enrollment Phase 2

Affordable Healthcare Enrollment Phase 2

There's still time to get the medical coverage you and your family need for 2015

After a bumpy start, the Affordable Care Act enrolled more than 15 million people who did not previously have health insurance, into affordable healthcare plans. Though many people experienced problems signing up during open enrollment, the kinks were eventually worked out, and people are now able to sign up for the health care they want and need.

Open enrollment for 2015 began on Nov. 15, and those who signed up over the first month were able to start their new health care coverage on Jan. 1, 2015. Those who missed the first deadline still have time to get affordable health insurance for 2015. Open enrollment will continue through Feb. 15, which gives people plenty of time to review the plans on the healthcare exchange, or to speak with an insurance specialist to find the right coverage options.

Those who signed up between Dec. 16 and Jan. 15 were able to begin their new health insurance on Feb. 1. Those who sign up now will have through Feb. 15 to get insurance coverage that begins on March 1.

Those who miss the Feb. 15 deadline will not have another opportunity to purchase health insurance in 2015. If you miss the second deadline, you will have to wait until open enrollment begins again in November 2015, with coverage starting in January 2016. Only those who experience a qualifying life event between now and then will be able to get an exception to this rule. A qualifying life event includes having a child, getting married or divorced. Without such an exception, you could be without vital health coverage for a full year if you do not act now.
